Whether asphalt, mineral felt, slate, tile or lead Grand Alliance will bring a swift and effective resolution to any roofing fault.

Pitched Roof

The pitched roof is the most common type of roof construction used in new dwellings today. Pitched roof design will include a system of structural elements usually made from timber which provide support to a sarking felt, sarking board or breather membrane underlay. Over the underlay, tiling battens are nailed directly to the structural elements, providing support and a fixing point for a weather proof layer which normally consists of slate, concrete or clay tiles. The primary function of a pitched roof is to shed water from a dwelling in poor weather conditions; however it has also become an increasingly important element when considering the most cost effective ways in which energy use in dwellings can be saved.

Flat Roof

Most flat roofs consist of a timber decking nailed to the roof joists covered with three layers of roofing felt. They are often used on house extensions and garages. Using a layer of proprietary chipping compound, such as limestone, gravel or granite on top of the layers of felt, strengthens the surface further. The idea is for the surface to reflect rather than absorb sunlight, thus helping to protect the felt.

Slate Roof

Slates are usually more time consuming to fix than tiles because every individual slate has to be aligned and fixed into place with two nails; there are no nibs on the back to locate them on the wooden battens.

Tiled Roof

Roof tiles are available in a range of patterns and colours. They are usually made of concrete, but occasionally made of clay. The colour range includes shades of red, green, brown and green. The finish of the tiles can be smooth or grained. As with all smooth surfaces, rain will run off more quickly and the grained tile is only suitable for a roof having a greater slope. Check with the manufacturer when choosing a tile, as they will recommend the minimum sloping angle for each style they produce.

Roof and Guttering

The roof and guttering must be kept in a good condition to enable a property to remain weatherproof. Ineffective covering can lead to expensive work to the underlying timbers and any decorative finishes, which will deteriorate rapidly in damp conditions. Different roof coverings have varying life spans. The materials used, the quality of the workmanship and the exposure to the elements will all be contributing factors to the effective life of the roof. There are some that last for a hundred years or more, while others deteriorate after 40 years, some are only guaranteed for 20 years reliable cover. You may only realise that a repair is needed on the roof when ceiling stains are noticed in a room after rainfall. This indicates that water is leaking into the roof space and you should always repair damage as soon as possible to stop further rainfall damaging the fabric of the house.
